First, it’s the newest vintage of a perennial great value from the stable of awesome values produced by Bodegas Borsao and imported by Jorge Ordonez Selections. (See Top 5 Spanish red wines.) Second, the $5.99-a-bottle sale price at Fresh Market is about the lowest price in the county. And third, the sale comes just in time for Thanksgiving, and as we noted in yesterday’s column, these medium-bodied Spanish reds are good complements to the holiday feast.
This consistency from one vintage to the next is why we suggested in July that this might be the best $7 red wine ever. Borsao makes wines predominantly from garnacha – a.k.a. grenache in France’s Rhone Valley and elsewhere – ranging from the $5 Viña Borgia to its much more expensive cousin Tres Picos. But the best value is the Borsao Garnacha, also known as Borsao Tinto, oddly the one blend in the Borsao portfolio, which includes 15 to 20 percent tempranillo (the Spanish grape made famous in Rioja).
And at $6 a bottle, you can afford to stock up not only for Thanksgiving, but the whole holiday season. But get to Vienna early. The sale is only good while supplies last, and Fresh Market expects to sell out before the store closes at 9pm. (For other Washington-area stores that carry Borsao, see this slideshow.)
