Finewine.com in Gaithersburg sold out their allotment of Ken Forrester Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot Western Cape Petit 2010 after they put it on sale for $11.98 a bottle. (Olney Beer & Fine Wine only has about three cases left, at $12.99.) But last week’s bargain only got better this week, when Calvert Woodley made the new vintage of Ken Forrester Petit red blend its Wine of the Week, on sale for just $8.49 a bottle.
“The engagingly fresh 2010 Ken Forrester Petit Cabernet-Merlot is among the most stylish and sophisticated value-priced red wines I’ve tasted in quite some time,” writes CW’s Ben Giliberti, former Washington Post wine columnist, now CW’s director of wine eduction.“It’s also a wonderful introduction to the immensely improved South African wines, which neatly straddle the line between the restrained Old World style of Bordeaux and the fruit forward New World style of California, Argentina and Chile.”
Last week’s column on Ken Forrester Petit Cab-Merlot went live on Friday morning, and in the afternoon @CalvertWoodley tweeted: “In stock at CW for $9.99!”
When we tweeted back that we had checked its website and couldn’t find the wine (can’t write a Budget Wine column in this town without checking calvertwoodley.com), @CW responded “@DCBudgetWineGuy Just got it in yesterday as a new item, so the website may not be caught up yet. Might see a better price on Monday!”
As previously noted, there were only 1,000 cases of the Ken Forrester Cab-Merlot imported into the entire US market, so the chances of this great value lasting more than a few weeks are very slim. And the chances of this sale price lasting past Saturday are even more remote.
